From the time that we start school we are taught to write. In kindergarten we are taught to write our alphabets and numbers. In first grade we are taught the techniques on how to form words and sentences.

“Devoid of Content” is an article written by Stanley Fish in which he states that students are not being taught how to write coherent sentences, that the teachers are neglecting to teach students what sentences really are. I disagree with Fish. Teachers are not solely responsible for the students learning to write. Students don’t do their part when it comes to learning to write. According to the National Commission on writing students just don’t take the time that they need to neither learn nor do they apply themselves. So it’s not all the teachers fault. Fish also talks about an assignment that he gives his students consisting of making up a new language. I don’t see what that has to do with teaching the student content and form. No two teachers teach the same, one method of teaching is no better than the next method of teaching. However I do agree with the National Commission on Writing that there should be other methods invented to help students to improve their writing skills, but at the same time the student need to take responsibility and take charge of their willingness to learn and apply the skills the best of their capability.

The National Commission on Writing is a report that states that most students, by the time they reach college have the beliefs that they know all that there is to know about writing. This is not true at all. Most college students have to be placed in an English course because their writing skills are not up to part. And this is not because of the teachers not teaching, but because the students not doing what they have to do. The National Commission is always looking for new ways to help students to improve their writing skills, but at the same time students have to be willing to learn and be willing to apply what they have learned. Putting words into a relationship is something every individual should know whether it’s for school or the work place.

I agree with you. It’s not just up to the teacher but the students as well. I think Fish is wrong in his way of thinking.

I agree with you. Students really don’t do their part, and I don’t agree with Fish’s way of creating a new language. I think that it’s pointless.
